Digital Eye Strain in Millwoods

Our Eyes Are Working Harder Than Ever Before

Digital eye strain, also called computer vision syndrome, is an unfortunate by-product of the digital age in which we live.

A recent survey by the Alberta Association of Optometrists found that Albertans spend a lot of time using digital devices, with the individuals surveyed spending, on average, between 8.5 and 12.5 hours per day staring at screens.

With statistics like these, it’s no wonder that our eyes can end up feeling dry, strained, and tired most of the time. If this sounds like you, book an appointment with Infinite Eyecare today. We can recommend some strategies to help you mitigate or even avoid digital eye strain.

Signs & Symptoms

Digital eye strain symptoms may include:

    Dry eyes
    Headaches
    Blurry or double vision
The inability to focus both visually and mentally
    Red, tired eyes
    Eyelid twitching
    Neck, shoulder, or back pain

Digital Eye Strain Prevention

The most obvious preventative measure is to decrease the time spent in front of your digital device. However, depending on the nature of your work, this isn’t always possible. To help keep your eyes comfortable, there are a few things you can do to help reduce or avoid digital eye strain.

Digital devices emit a lot of artificial blue light, which can be hard on our eyes. Blue light waves are scattered, which reduces contrast. This means that the eye has to work harder to focus. Special blue light filtering glasses and lens coatings can help filter out blue light, reducing eye strain.

We offer Eyezen lenses, enhanced single-vision glasses that filter out blue light and may help alleviate eye strain caused by the prolonged exposure to digital screens. Eyezen is just one of the lens brands we offer at Infinite Eyecare.

To help give your eyes a break, try to follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a break from your screen and look at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This allows your eye muscles to relax and can alleviate symptoms of stress and strain on your eyes.

Small adjustments to your home office or workspace can help reduce eye strain. Things like:

Adjusting your screen, so it’s below eye level and an arm’s length away.
Altering your screen brightness and font size.
Eliminating screen glare by adjusting overhead lighting.
    Repositioning your keyboard.

This was a pretty cool experience, I never really thought that I need glasses, but apparently I do need them. The process was pretty quick, you do some fun little exams at first with the staff then the doctor gives you the good old eye exam and if you pass you are good. And if not you will mostlikly need some sort of prescription. I got my prescription fairly smoothly, and right after I picked out my frames with the very supportive staff. They helped me the whole way, they gave me their honest opinions about the frames that looked better on me and some fun facts, plus they adjusted some of the pairs just to see how good they would be on me. Finally, for payment their instructions were pretty clear if there were any problems with insurance or anything like that. Overall, it took about 2 hours for me and my brother, that’s because I was picky with my frames (can’t help it, first time you know). Thanks a lot for the support Infinite Eyecare and I can’t wait for my glasses to arrive😁😁!!!
