As you get older, your eyes change, and regular eye exams become an important part of staying healthy and independent. For seniors in Edmonton and Mill Woods, a common question is what Alberta Health Care covers and what to expect at an appointment. This guide explains coverage in plain language so you can plan your visit with confidence.

What Alberta Health Care Covers for Seniors

In Alberta, eye exams for seniors aged 65 and older are covered by Alberta Health Care. Eye exams for children under 19 are also covered. For seniors, coverage includes a comprehensive eye exam when it is due under the provincial schedule, as well as partial exams and follow-up visits for specific eye health concerns when they apply.

Please bring your Alberta Health Care card to every appointment so we can check your information at check-in.

What Is Included in a Senior Eye Exam

A senior eye exam checks both your vision and the health of your eyes. Your optometrist will review your health history and medications, check how clearly you see at distance and up close, and update your glasses prescription if needed.

The exam also includes checks for conditions that become more common with age, such as cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye changes. This may include measuring eye pressure, looking at the retina, and testing side vision. Finding changes early can help your optometrist plan follow-up care or a referral when needed.

How Often Seniors Should Book an Exam

Many seniors benefit from an eye exam every year, even if their vision feels fine. Some eye conditions have no early symptoms, so changes can be missed without regular testing. Your optometrist may suggest a different schedule based on your prescription, overall health, or a condition that needs closer monitoring.

Book sooner if you notice blurry vision, trouble reading, glare when driving at night, new floaters or flashes of light, or a sudden change in vision. Sudden changes should be checked promptly.

What May Not Be Fully Covered

Alberta Health Care covers the exam services described above, but it does not cover glasses, contact lenses, or lens options. Those costs depend on the frames and lenses you choose. Some seniors have additional benefits through a private or retiree plan.

Infinite Eyecare offers direct billing to most major insurers, which can help reduce paperwork for the portion covered by your private plan. Coverage varies by plan, so bring your insurance information with you. We cannot check insurance coverage or run a predetermination over the phone, so an in-person visit is the best way to review your benefits.

What to Bring to Your Appointment

Bring your Alberta Health Care card, a list of current medications, your current glasses, and your insurance details if you have a private plan. It also helps to note any vision changes and any family history of eye disease.
